Hopscotch 2024

I had been awaiting the announcement of the lineup for the Raleigh, NC annual music festival, Hopscotch, with bated breath. Would it be as good as last year, which featured Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Japanese Breakfast, Digable Planets, Alvvays, Sunny Day Real Estate, American Football and Soccer Mommy? At the same time, I knew this year’s lineup would fall short as a successor to last year’s. It was inevitable.

So, I guess you could say that I wasn’t totally let down by the 2024 list of participating bands (and comedians). It isn’t as packed as last year’s but it really couldn’t have been. There are some bright spots, though. I never got to see The Jesus Lizard (known as an incredible live band) in the 90s when I was a fan and the prolific Guided By Voices has similarly always eluded me. This situation is a bit like having a time machine to go pick up the shows I felt like I should have caught 30 years ago.

As far as the more contemporary acts go, I’ve wanted to see Snail Mail and country shoegazers Wednesday probably put on a good show.

The best thing about the festival, though, is that my son wants to go. Particularly as he will be in college at that time, I am grateful for the opportunity to spend some time with him. If we get to see some legendary and up and coming bands during that bonding experience, then so much the better.
